  • Formal Writing Final Drafts are due THIS FRIDAY!

DO NOW: PREPARING TO CONFERENCE [3 min]
  • Find the your partner (per your advisor) and find a space in the room you can think and talk with minimal disruption and distraction.
  • Share your formal writing (no matter how rough) with each other in suggesting mode. (If you currently don't have assess, please unsubmit it from G. Classroom. Do not email teachers to have it returned)

INTRODUCE S.T.A.R. PROCESS [7 min]
  • Review the student guide and today's process together as a group.
    • What questions do you have?
    • What do you think will be valuable about this process?
    • What suggestions do you have for giving good quality feedback?

PEER CONFERENCING | FEEDBACK [45 min]
  1. Read through the entire paper without making any comments or suggestions. This is to get the essence for the argument in its entirety.
  2. S- Substitution. Reread your partner's writing. This time, focus on specific words. Which ones need to be replaced by stronger words? Make comments on these words with suggestions for different words.
  3. T- Take things out, A- Add. Reread the writing for the 3rd time. Focus this time on what fits, what doesn't fit, and what you want to know more about. Suggest deleting sections that seem to not fit, or offer suggestions about what to add so it does make sense.
  4. R- Rearrange. Read your partner's writing for the 4th and final time. This time you are looking for FLOW. Does the order of the paragraphs make sense? Are the sentences in an order that they flow into each other?
  5. Writers should then review the feedback they have received and ask clarifying questions as needed.
  6. Writers will make a revision plan for tonight and tomorrow based on the feedback they received.
**Writing is circular! Today this process was structured for you. On Thursday, we will be doing this again, but without the rigidity of this specific process. The intent was to have you intentionally, fully, and thoughtfully review a peer's piece of writing at multiple levels.
