Your formal writing component was due on October 21st and Addie is making her way through to write feedback on everyone of our 160 formal writing components. If you were given feedback on your paper and there are any standards that are less than proficient, please revise with patience. Revisions will most likely not be recorded or adjusted in the gradebook immediately.
    • Materials List: This should not take long, so please get your list completed. The Material survey and ordering must be turned in by Thursday, October 28th if you need materials ordered through the school. Materials will be purchased on a first come, first serve basis.

Thursday, Sept 15th | Organizing & Questioning

Who are we as a community of thinkers, innovators?
What do I need to know about myself and my community, in order to develop a project?
How can I document and share my thinking through effective routines and organization?
Thank you all for engaging conversations about professional models yesterday.

Please remember to take Attendance.

So far this week, we have had the opportunity to brainstorm different topics and survey different art forms. It is valuable, at this point, to have more than one topic to take deeper into ideation. Please keep in mind that many considerations go into a successful proposal, and project advisors will only approve viable proposals.

Today we will set up an organizational system used to capture thinking as well as communicate thinking to project advisors. We will also generate questions and consult different advisors to test our topics.

DO NOW: (10:00-10:10)
As a group, walk through the process of creating and curating a Google Drive folder for the semester.

Google Drive >> New > Folder
  • Name this folder : Firstname Lastname | Project Block | Fall 2016
  • Example : Jacob Bartz | Project Block | Fall 2016
  • Share this folder with your current project advisor.
Inside the folder, please place any documents already created and name them clearly with your name and a title for what the document is/says/does
  • Example : Jacob Bartz | Ideation Lists | Fall 2016
  • Example : Jacob Bartz | Ideation Mind Map | Fall 2016

DO NEXT: (10:10-10:30)
Use Question Starters to begin generating questions about a topic.
  • Click on the link above.
  • Rename the document: Firstname Lastname | Question Starts : Topic | Fall 2016
  • Move the document into your new folder for Project Block.
  • Use the document to generate questions - keeping in mind that we are still seeking possibilities, ways of framing the topic that will lead to a project. Driving questions will emerge after some initial research and conferences with advisors.
  • Repeat this process for each topic you are considering (more than one)

Q&A: (10:30-11:00). Students should check the list of advisors on the Ideation Page. They should prepare specific questions for certain advisors, based on content area.  Communicate with a purpose.  In a professional email, students should contact at least two different advisors with specific questions.  Students need to understand that a reply will not be immediate, and that the conversation may continue over the next few days, either in person or through email.  Students considering Year Long Projects need to email Erin NOW about proposal expectations. Students working with collaborators need to email those partners right now.

Sharing: (11:00-11:15) Students share out their progress - What questions were answered? How did that stimulate your thinking? What questions remain unanswered? What are your next steps?

Tomorrow, we will set up structures for initial research and begin working toward driving questions. .

Thursday, Sept 24th | Proposal Revision & Reading

STAFF NOTES:

  • Attendance: Please take attendance using the attendance spreadsheet. Add days, if needed. Sam is requesting that we update the sheet within the first 15 minutes.
  • Disciplinary Groups: On Monday, we will rearrange students into their disciplinary groups and launch formal research. Prior to Monday, please review all proposals of students entering your discipline for the semester and consider recommended reading for their research.
  • Revised Proposals: As you work with students on their proposal revisions, please update the Jupiter assignment for "Proposal - Wondering" (A 3 is an approved proposal, please use comments to update/clarify any details, reminders for the student.) Also, update the "IDEAS Project Block | Proposal Submission (responses)" document, so that we know which disciplinary group students should be placed in.
  • Appointments: Please note that Addie is only available by appointment and Beckah will communicate about the students she is meeting with in advance. Please do not send any students.

Who are we as a community of thinkers, innovators?

  • Write a work plan for studio time: What steps will you need to take, in order to complete your goal? What resources will you use?
  • Set a stretch goal for studio time: If you finish your goal, what will you do next?
STUDIO TIME: Document/share goals. Make it all happen!

  • Advisors should try to meet briefly with each student to find out the status of their proposal, project, and course of initial research.
  • Students beginning research are encouraged to review the Academic Research page on the Humanities Website for a definition and the Research and Annotation page for specific sources and guidelines for keeping track of what is being read. (Note: There will be specific lessons to support this next week.)
CLOSING CIRCLE: Wave-around! (Again) Share one thing that is challenging you about your proposal or research.

10:30 a.m. At this time, students are encouraged to review Advisor Profiles on the Ideation Page. They should prepare specific questions for certain advisors. On a whiteboard (or another place) each person should sign out - Stating their names & where they are going and who they intend to talk to.

10:35 a.m.  Students can leave classrooms with a purpose....and notebooks, Chromebooks, post-its, etc to have brief conversations with advisors who have an interest or expertise related to the topic. (Note: Rod and some Mosaic teachers may not be available. Find them after school.) This could also be a time for collaborators to bounce ideas off of one another.

11:05 a.m.  Students return to original groups and share out their progress.

Tomorrow, we will set up structures for initial research and begin working toward driving questions. Students considering year long projects need to read this.

Week of May 18 - 20th | Preparation for Exhibitions

We are a week away from the exhibitions that culminate the thinking, questioning, experimenting, creating, and realizing of project block. Week of April 20-24 | Professional Models and Habits

At the end of this week we will be one month from Exhibitions of learning! This is "gut-check" week! The week you ask yourself: "What do I have to do to make this project happen? to meet the expectations that I set for myself? to create a high quality interpretation in order to engage an audience in new thinking about my topic?"

Habits of Professionalism:

  • EARLY WEEK: Revisit your Habits of Learning Conversation from early in the semester (connecting it to the creation phase now) and/or Habits of Work Paper Sculptures (giving the opportunity for revision or remaking, as a reflection on the creative process). Everyone should have the intention of organizing or maintaining evidence for their Evidence Check on Friday.
  • MID WEEK: Professional Models are always important, there are two significant experiences to consider this week. How will the Lexicon of Sustainability (Re: Karen Mead Library on Wednesday) and Camille Brown (Grades 9 and 10 at JMKAC on Wednesday) CONNECT/EXTEND/CHALLENGE your project?
  • FRIDAY: Evidence Check. As a disciplinary group, you will follow through on your evidence plan for this semester. Advisors are encouraged to have a whole group, small group, or 1:1 conference to review evidence and connect the evidence to Habits. This evidence check will be reported to Jupiter to give students, parents, and everyone an indicator of how projects are progressing.
Exhibitions of Learning:
  • If you have not completed the form to sign up for an Exhibition space, please see Molly's email and do so as soon as possible.
  • Exhibitions are on May 26th and 28th. Please take off of work and plan accordingly.

Research Paper Redux:

  • Communicate and meet with Addie to make sure that your completed or revised Research Papers are reviewed.

UPCOMING PROFESSIONAL MODELS:
(Please adjust your calendars, as these will take place during P-Block.)

APRIL 29th - Colleen Machut and the Huzzah Theater Troop will be performing as a professional model for the creative process and for an Exhibition of Learning. This will be at IDEAS. (We are looking for a staff volunteer to cover Coleen's first class.)

MAY 14th - Louder Than A Bomb is a documentary about young spoken word poets showing at the JMKAC. They are just beginning a residency that will continue into the fall. They are doing a special showing of the film for us.

The Week of April 7-10th | Exhibition and Evidence Planning

This week disciplinary groups will use the routines and structures that were set up before break. Groups are encouraged to discuss, evaluate, and tweak routines, as the creation phase progresses. Any changes made should be documented in the Ritualized Weeks document. Please use the same document to support students with multi-disciplinary projects and who may need to participate in the professional models, feedback, or other aspects of another discipline.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS
Students, with the support of their advisors and disciplinary groups, should ensure they manage the following:

  • Language Arts - Please communicate with Addie regarding Bridge Paper revisions. Schedule Writing Conferences. Make sure that she has access to your Project Block Google Folder within your LA folder.
  • Calendar - At this point, each person should have a hard copy calendar filled out to the end of the trimester. Each day should have some specific project intention or a school/group intention. Best practice is to update each day as they happen, but don't erase your intention. Instead, reflect on the factors that are affecting your progress. What did you intend? What did you actually do? What's your next step?
  • Exhibitions of Learning - Advisors will conference with each student to help complete the Spring Exhibitions 2015 form. The information documented on this form will be used to schedule venues and publish programs. It is essential that you take the time to envision your project and your exhibition prior to completing the form. Exhibitions are on May 26th and 28th.

DISCIPLINARY GROUPS

  • Routinized Week - If you have not already created and shared your daily/weekly routines, please do so in the Ritualized Week document. Please look at the examples in the document and the previous post for some ideas. Please do this by THURSDAY, APRIL 9
  • Evidence of Learning - As a group, identify the types and purposes of evidence you'll have for Habits of Work and Habits of Communication throughout the Creation Phase. Please do this by FRIDAY, APRIL 10. The first evidence reflection will be at the end of April.
