Today, Molly will be going through the Exhibitions schedule, expectations, jobs, and audience expectations.  Exhibitions of Learning are something that other schools do not have.  It is something that makes us unique to have everyone in our school present their learning to the community every semester of their high school career.  This is daunting, but also amazing and fulfilling.  Enjoy the experience.  It is alright to feel stressed, overwhelmed, or even scared.  This may be your first time presenting something in public.  We are all here to support one another.

Today is about Metacognition.  We are all a part of this intellectual community and we encourage you to take that mentality out beyond our walls.  It translates well to the professional world.  The one thing that many of the professionals always come back and tell us after interacting with our students is their level of questioning and thinking.  Why let this falter at our own Exhibitions?  Engage your audience in thinking and as an audience member, engage in the intellectual community.

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016 | Presentation Skills Development Workshops | Part Two

Yesterday was a successful jump into project presentation preparation.  Use your studio time effectively.  Let us stay focused before we leave for a week. Keep yourself engaged and primed to present.  We consciously gave studio time after the presentation skills workshops for you to apply the skills you have observed in those sessions.  Every moment you have during IDEAS Block is valuable, just ask our experienced presenters.  Many of you ask what makes a Spotlight presentation and high quality preparation is a huge part of that decision making process. Tomorrow we will have individual lessons on thinking routines and metacognition.

Friday, December 16th, 2016 | Artist Statements are due! Start Presentation Preparation

Artist statements are due today.  You have created something, big or small.  It is time to showcase your learning process.  Your artist statement helps fill in the gaps that your creation may not tell about your artistic intent.  This will be your second line of defense for communicating your creation.  You first line of defense and explanation is your Exhibition.  Today, you will be able to start developing the presentation portion of your exhibition.

DO NOW

• Turn in your Artist Statement to Addie in the IDEAS Block ELA Google Classroom
• If you are not ready to do this, then the expectation is that your artist statement is turned in by the end of the class period today.

DO NEXT

• Set up your studio time journal based on your needs for today.  If your artist statement is not complete, set a goal surrounding this.
• If you are ready, go to the presentation page on the Humanities Webpage. The outline for an exhibition is there.

Thursday, December 15, 2016 | Feedback Session & Ladder of Feedback Protocol

Yesterday, you ran through feedback with a partner. Today is an opportunity for the group to practice on intentional feedback as we prepare for exhibitions.  Approach feedback with a growth mindset and look for ways to help others grow.  Keep your language focused around helping them to grow and make their artistic intent well communicated.

DO NOW
Choose one Artist Statement from the group to workshop.  Someone who is seeking more complete feedback.  Complete the ladder of feedback protocol with their artist statement.

• Review/Clarify Outcomes 
• Presenter will review outcomes for the team. At this time, presenter will identify what changes are being made and what feedback those changes are based upon.  (5 minutes)
• Review of relevant documents
• Class will review relevant documents being presented on. Members should have already read through these, but this time is for an additional read-through with outcomes in mind. Presenter will review and reflect on documents with team. (5 minutes)
• Ladder of Feedback
• Clarifying Questions (5 minutes)
• Only questions necessary for understanding documents or outcomes.
• Values (2 minutes)
  Go around the room twice

Wednesday, December 14th, 2016 | Workshopping your Artist Statement

Artist statements lay the foundation for others to understand your work and interpretation in your art form.  It is your opportunity to share more of your background knowledge and your argument that you are making.  This is your chance to show your passion and purpose.  WHY DOES YOUR PROJECT MATTER?  These will be posted at the venues for community members to read and understand your artistic intent. Remember, your work can be displayed beyond our school walls and shared at conferences such as Maker Faire Milwaukee.  Your artist statement is a key component to sharing your work.


DO NOW
Mix and Mingle | Find a partner that has been the same fast food restaurant as you have recently and didn't know it! (can also be assigned by your IDEAS Block Creation Advisor). Read your partner's Artist Statement quietly to yourself first AND then out loud to your partner. After reading, document a Connect. Extend. Challenge.  Repeat this process with your own Artist Statement.  Record your C|E|CH on either a document or in paper form for feedback. (This process should take about 10-15 minutes per person).

• How does the statement connect to your own statement? What connections can you make between their structure writing and your own?
• How does the statement extend your thinking about what should or should not be included in an Artist Statement? How would you change your own artist statement?
• What can this artist do to improve their statement?  What questions are still left open by their artist statement?  How does theirs challenge your own?

Week of December 12-16 | Artist Statements and Planning for Exhibitions of Learning

Last week, everyone has rounded out Creation Phase within their discipline.  We are done with creation processes in class time.  If you choose to revise your project on your own time, then setup times within your creation advisor's office hours after school.  You are welcome to revise your works of art, dances, and engineered designs on your own time.  We start the next step in the creative process, Presentation.  We prepare to present through Artist Statements to communicate artistic intent and vision.

• Creation Advisors will share your End Product Rubric grades for IDEAS Block
• Next week we will focus on Presentation and proper preparation.  We will also conduct presentation workshops for everyone to prepare a high quality presentation.  Even if you struggled during your creation process, you can exhibit your learning 
• When we return from Winter Break, we will spend that week preparing for Exhibitions through Practice Presentations.  When you are home or around relatives during Winter Break, try practicing your presentation in front of them.

This is your last week of creation. What are you going to do to to round out this phase? What do you have that is not quite finished? What can you add more complexity to? Have you taken feedback into consideration? Think about your vision of your Exhibition in January. Who will be there? What professionals have you worked with?

Please avoid scheduling any appointments during the school day (talk with your parents and remind them). • Remember our school days are shifted on our Exhibitions of Learning days.  It is your normal school hours and attendance is tracked.  Please avoid scheduling any appointments during the school day (talk with your parents and remind them).  Athletes must have notes from their coaches, otherwise your attendance on those nights are expected (Official hours will be clarified soon).

Evidence Check #1 | Where are you in your process? | Friday, Nov. 17, 2016

We are officially at our halfway mark for creation phase.  Today, your advisor will be meeting with you individually, going over where you are in terms of your evidence.  You will fill out a rubric together and provide feedback based on where you need to be for the December 9th deadline for final products in creation phase.

 After December 9th, we will be moving into Artist Statements and Presentations.

Take some time to reflect on your trimester and the growth you have made.  As you move into new opportunities in new seminars, think about how you can continue to foster your growth as an artist in multiple disciplines.  We look forward to your final products!

Seminar registration will be sent to Vicki by the end of lunch today, so caps for class (maximum capacity) will be set then.  If you miss registration, you will only be able to register for open seminars that have not met their cap.

Enjoy your day of previews.  We hope you chose to try something new and get a taste for what makes our school so unique.  Anyone can take any class and feel welcome in those spaces! Remember that a preview is not a commitment.

Academic teachers are welcome to preview any classes that you may not have seen in action as well. It is always fascinating to see what our colleagues do so well.

Week of November 14-18 | Creation Phase Continued

After an eventful week last week, groups should be into their ritualized weeks.  If your group is still working through the ritualized week, you can follow the plans as previously laid out.  Blogs will come out with Announcements this week, but lesson plans will be based on the discipline group and their advisor. This week we will have seminar previews on Thursday for Trimester 2 seminars.

This is our last full week of the trimester, make it count!

Monday | Professional Models

Wednesday | Tinker in your Discipline

• Take the first 15 minutes of class to dive into something engaging in your discipline such as creative movement, take apart something, write a short story, doodle a poodle, etc. Then return to your studio time journals.

• You will not have IDEAS Block time for working on projects.  Seminar previews will happen in the following schedule (may be changing, so be flexible and watch the blog):

• The Micro Lab Protocol (IDEAS Block Advisor acts as timer for the group)
• Groups of 3 - Number of based on the number of groups needed (15 students - 5 groups).  Students who are in the same group are not to be in the same sharing group.
• Students each get 3 minute to share their project and creation they have thus far.  Only the sharing student is allowed to speak.  
• After each student shares, there is 15 seconds of silence for everyone to process what was said and thinking about connections for what can be said later on.  
• After students have all shared, there is 5 minutes to share as a group in overflow (what did not get a chance to be said).

Goal Setting (13 minutes)

• (3 minutes) - Completed on Studio Time Journal following Smart Goal format.  Pair and Share Goals
• (5 minutes) - Goal Sharing: Quick 3-5 words

• Circle up - Choose someone to present their project components. Take 8 minutes to present your project.
• Feedback - Others complete their feedback on a slip of paper or postit note.  Write down Warm/Cool/Suggestions for feedback.  Remember to keep feedback specific and think about what kind of feedback you would want. When you are done with a piece of feedback, crumple it into a ball and toss it into the middle of the circle for a Trash Talk.  When the presentation is complete, everyone grab a piece of feedback from the middle and share out responses from the paper.
